Off & on

Greetings from sunny Cyprus & welcome to a few new subscribers.

I've got 10 minutes to write this off-the-cuff so forgive any typos.

So, sometimes life seems to hint at lessons for how things work.

Other times it whacks you round with them.

On Thursday am, as we sat on the runway at Gatwick, our chirpy pilot said there would be a slight delay due to a software issue.

Cue groans and babies crying.

How a baby knows a flight is delayed, I don't know...

Maybe they can sense it from the parents.

After about an hour of multiple engineers having a go, with a running backseat driver commentary from the pilot, he explained that all the lights would go off.

They were turning everything off.

To turn it all back on.

Now, this didn't provide an immediate fix, but don't let the truth get in the way of a good newsletter/story and let's just say we were soon in the air.

Later in the (mini) trip, Liv & I were unwinding from the day of wedding venue viewing to watch something on the Mac.

We're hooked on the Netflix series, Yellowstone.

However, although we'd got on the hotel WiFi earlier in the day, just when we needed it it wasn't working.

After fiddling for a bit, I got it on the WiFi, but then it turned out Netflix Cyprus didn't have Yellowstone. We needed to be on my O2 5G. I'll stop this long, dry, part of the story short—and basically to achieve this I needed to turn the Mac off & on.

Once that was done. Cue bedtime viewing and another enticing episode. Those writers know how to use turning points 🤩

The few days out here on the island have also enabled a bit of a personal unplug too.

Away from the daily routines. Away from 'busy' days. Swoop Patagonia projects. Book 1 marketing. Book 2 editing.

I've turned (bits of) my brain off.

And the magic thing is—the ideas have been flowing.

A couple of things have clicked.

Alas, we have a return flight to catch in a few hours, but at least I know I'll be returning home with the power back on.

Do you sometimes need an unplug too?

Let me know if you do.

Have a great Sunday.

Or is there?Last week (on a bit of a whim) I loaded a free promotion for The Monkey State eBook. Given it's only listed at 99 pence or cents, I didn't think much of it. But a quick end of bank holiday KDP dashboard check... And 100+ people had grabbed their free copy. This rose to 173 by the end of the day. Things slowed down from there and yet the 5-day offer gave a real boost to orders: Last week on the KDP dashboard 🐒 It was obviously exciting to see as it propelled the book to the top of...

Morning, As mentioned I thought it'd be cool to mark three months since release by answering a few of your questions. Thanks to those of you who submitted one. I'm sticking to my word and capping it at the first 5.So, without further ado, here we go...1. I hope the map of the Monkey State would not be too precise/rigid, treeper paths whilst interesting, should be left to the readers imagination should they not ?A very astute question. One that the mapmaker & I are conscious of. The way I see...

Easter Sunday (20 April) will mark three months since the monkeys were released into the wild 🎉🐒I'll therefore be writing/sending a special edition of this newsletter on the day. It'll be a Q&A format of the first 5 questions I get asked.About the book or process that is. Not general life aha. So if you're intrigued about anything from The Monkey State — Characters origins, sales, worldbuilding, KU page reads, imposter syndrome, royalties, challenges, would I recommend writing a book etc. —...
