The Monkeys Reloaded

Morning,

So, this one was certainly a struggle, an adventure, and a classic late scramble... all rolled into one.

But I'm pleased to say that Book 2: In Search of Maya is now available on Amazon.

Thanks to those of you who've already jumped in (before I even put up a post!)

And cheers to those who popped a review live for Book 1 last week.

I was shooting for 50 and reached 49, with an average of 4.9.

There’s some poetic beauty in that.

Now what is Book 2 about?

Well, of course, you can check out the official blurb online, but really if Book 1 was about escape, Book 2 is about freedom…

I’ll give one clue to start - Maya is the spiritual concept rather than anything to do with the Maya civilisation.

I’d later toyed with the idea of calling it In Search of Paradise.

However, the cover had already been made and although that might have been more hook-y, the use of Maya is truer to the tale.

For the sloth-pace readers on this list (just messing!) or those who want a refresher on what the heck happened in Book 1 > you could get what you need from Sam & Pam’s Book Radar which pretty neatly summarises The Monkey State in 16 minutes.

As you’ll see if you get to the acknowledgements, no cheating and going straight to those this time… In Search of Maya does draw on my backpacker travel experiences after leaving certain jobs.

That exhilarating cocktail of fun & freedom that could make it the perfect holiday read for you this summer.

I’ll probably waffle more about it, but, to be honest I’m just relieved to have got it over the line.

The monkeys are back out in the wild 🐒🥳🐒

Book 3 should be easy now, right?

Hang comfy,

J. R. Roberts

P.S. More in the acknowledgements but a big thank you to this monkey trio: Kathy, Wendy and Mum for being the ones to really help haul it over that line.

P.P.S It’s quite fitting that it’s Glastonbury Festival this weekend. Those of you there, or who have been, will know it’s quite a surreal, incredible and sometimes challenging experience. A different world almost. Then you reach the Monday and the sensation is even stranger. There are some clear parallels with In Search of Maya. I’ll leave it at that for now.

That's how many more books I've sold in the last 7 days compared to the past 7 months The Monkey State has been out in the wild. Now, 'sold' is a misnomer as around 95% were free copies as part of the promo I've been rabbiting on about recently. It's taken the total tally for both books to 3,019 - with a heavy ebook and US reader skew now. Maths isn't my strong point. There's a reason I write. What I can see clearly though is it's 2,350 more people with a copy of the monkeys in their hands (or...

I was recently chatting with a colleague at work about HBO's plan to adapt Harry Potter into a TV series. It's a bold vision to create a series for each of the 7 books, spread over a decade. My friend went on to claim, 'Original stories are dead!' I had to admit, he had a point... Between endless sequels, reboots, and “reimaginings,” it can feel like the spark of fresh, original storytelling has truly dimmed. But there are exceptions. New explorations of existing story worlds are not without...
